Information about EDYC

This page contains general information about EDYC and provides links to more detailed and specific information.

General Information

East Down Yacht Club ( EDYC ) has extensive facilities for both cruising and racing. It is located on the western shores of Strangford Lough, Co Down, Northern Ireland. The Club is situated on a 9-acre site, which includes a modern clubhouse, car parking, a boat-park, caravan and camping park, pontoons and slipways. Support services and amenities are available in the near by town of Killyleagh, only one mile from the Club. The barbecue and picnic areas provide additional space for relaxed hospitality (weather permitting). The upstairs function room and well stocked bar encourages a relaxed comfortable atmosphere. For the chocoholics, a tuck shop is available.

Members Handbook

The Member's Handbook, which is sent to each member of the club, contains the Club Rules and information about the running of the club. It also contains details of membership fees, Sailing Instructions, Courses, Planned Events, position of the club racing marks and our Child Protection Policy.

Self Help

East Down Yacht Club is mainly a self help club. Members are expected to assist with the running of the Club. To this end, rotas for race duties are published by the Sailing Captain and for bar duties by the House Captain. From time to time, work parties are arranged and members are requested to report to the Site captain for about two hours of work.

As well as complying with the Rules of the Club, Members are expected to observe notices issued by Committees, particularly with regard to personal safety, car and boat parking, and to avoid causing obstruction to others.

Racing

Yacht Racing, in the form of Points Series, takes place on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings during the sailing season (May to September). Starts and courses are provided for cruiser handicap racing (Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme), Leisure 17, Wayfarer, Topper, and dinghy handicap racing. Refreshments are available after racing from the bar. The results of the individual races in the series are usually available on this web site within a few days of the race.

From time to time the Club hosts important events for both cruisers and dinghies. There is also a full programme of annual regattas and other open events elsewhere on the Lough at which EDYC members compete.

Cruising

At other times many members also sail their boats in a more leisurely and informal manner, including cruising around the Lough and further afield.
